As I hop out of the warm shower back on circus grounds, I see Tristan standing there with a towel. He wraps it around my dripping body, his eyes glued to mine. I can almost read his mind. He’s afraid to blink, thinking I’ll disappear. I know we should be coming up with a plan to catch Isaac. Clearly the man is not giving up so easily. Even if it means taking me against my will. But all I want for tonight is to not think about today or what will happen tomorrow. I just want to hold my man and sleep for eternity.

“Lucas… Where’s Lucas?” I ask suddenly, realizing I haven’t seen him since the helicopter.

Tristan’s voice is solemn when he says, “He’s out of surgery. They rang when you were in the shower. They removed the bullet. He will be okay after a few weeks’ rest. He’s lucky it only hit his shoulder.”

“And the pilot?” I question.

Tristan drops his head. “He’s dead. It was a single kill shot to the head.”

I flinch, knowing this is all my fault. I could have prevented this all from happening if only I hadn’t hesitated, and pulled the trigger instead.

“Shh,” Tristan whispers into my hair, covering it in kisses. “I know what you’re thinking, and no one but Isaac is to blame for this mess, so don’t for one second think otherwise. For tonight, just let me hold you. We will make a foolproof plan tomorrow, to ensure we don’t have a repeat of today.”

I relax with his words, laying my head on his shoulder as he picks me up bridal-style and places me on the bed so gently, as if he thinks I may break. I smile up at him through my swollen eyes and pull him down on me, knowing all I need right now is him. But Tristan has other plans. He lies beside me, pulling me against him and forcing me to relax in his embrace. Then he brushes a hand down my long hair and over my back.

I wake with a start and quickly look to my left. Tristan’s still asleep, so I leave the room as quiet as a mouse and make my way to the big-top. My head needs some clearing so I decide to get in a good workout before anyone else is up for the day.

Grabbing the silks in the middle of the tent, I start climbing to the top, where I stop, let out a sigh and breathe in the familiar scent of leather and candy. I shake out my shoulders and wrap the silk around my wrists, spinning a few times to get a feel for things. It’s been a few weeks since I’ve had a proper practice, and the way my body aches already tells me my muscles agree.

I drop down, to the midway point, and tie the silks around my waist, leaning back and stretching out my sore muscles. I pull one of my legs up against my head and then do the same with the other.
